Seahawks, Strategic Scoring & Celebrity Name Games
Nothing brings a morning show together quite like football, competition and immediately arguing over whether one member of the team’s score should even count. Episode 101 kicks off with the crew sorting through their Seahawks picks and realizing Devon’s presence has created a strategic probem in the season-long competition against The Fast Lane. If one team has an extra player, does Devon’s score count? Do they add somebody to the other side? Take the best five scores? Pretend nobody thought about this until the season had already started? All excellent questions. Very few useful answers. What we do know is that Rizz is technically sitting in first place, Moon is second, Lern is third, Rafe is behind them, and Devon’s zero becomes the center of a debate that feels significantly more serious than the actual stakes deserve. In other words, exactly how a funny podcast should handle sports. Then it’s time for Take Five, sponsored by Universal Windows Direct, with listeners trying to match answers with members of the show for a chance at tickets to Candlebox, Violent Femmes, Toadies with Local H, Babymetal with Halestorm and Rush. The concept is simple: one member of the crew goes into isolation while a caller answers three category questions. When the crew member comes back, they get five guesses to match the caller. Simple game. Deeply complicated people. Lern goes first with Tom, who needs her to match an NFL team with an animal mascot, a South American country and a Will Ferrell movie. “Jaguars” takes Lern all the way to her fifth guess, but she gets there. Anchorman proves much easier, and Tom walks away a winner. Then Moon gets paired with Ray, and things immediately begin deteriorating. Ray picks “I Want to Hold Your Hand” for a Beatles song, Big Daddy for an Adam Sandler movie and Deep Purple for a band with a color in its name. Moon responds to the Beatles category by initially offering “Let It Go,” which would have been revolutionary news for both John Lennon and the Walt Disney Company. He recovers with actual Beatles songs, but never finds Ray’s answer. Then comes Adam Sandler. Happy Gilmore. Billy Madison. The Wedding Singer. Grown Ups. Punch-Drunk Love. Moon circles practically the entire Sandler cinematic universe without landing on Big Daddy. Deep Purple becomes even more painful. Moon rattles through Blue October, Green Day, Blue Öyster Cult and The White Stripes, at one point getting tantalizingly close with “deep blue something.” Deep Purple was sitting right there, waving at him from across the room. Ray and Moon lose together. Friendship through mutual disappointment. Next up, Victoria is paired with Devon for categories including a famous person named Mike, a microwave food brand and something with a handle. Victoria chooses Mike Tyson, Banquet and a pitcher. Devon immediately says Mike Myers…and then discovers that apparently every other famous Mike has been temporarily deleted from her brain. Fortunately, “TV dinner” is close enough to Banquet for the crew to show mercy, and Devon somehow lands on coffee cup for something with a handle — remarkably close to Victoria’s pitcher and enough to prove once again that Devon can be sneakily dangerous in these games even while claiming she knows only one Mike. Finally, Rizz enters isolation for the last round. His caller chooses Dr. Strange for a famous fictional doctor, Frosted Flakes for a breakfast cereal and Lex Luthor for a famous bald person. Rizz tears through Dr. Dolittle, Dr. Seuss, Dr. Feelgood, Dr. Frank-N-Furter and Doctor Octopus without finding Doctor Strange. Then he absolutely crushes Frosted Flakes on his first try, setting up one final category for the win. Name a famous bald person. Vin Diesel. The Rock. Bruce Willis. Howie Mandel. Jason Statham. All extremely bald. All extremely famous. All completely wrong. The answer was Lex Luthor. That leads to the perfectly reasonable postgame argument over whether “famous bald person” should cause a human being to think of an actual celebrity or a fictional supervillain. Technically Lex Luthor is famous. Technically the caller followed the rules. Technically none of this makes Rizz feel any better. Episode 101 is a funny podcast built around exactly the kind of low-stakes chaos The Rizzuto Show somehow turns into a major competitive event: Seahawks strategy, questionable team math, listeners trying to crawl inside the crew’s brains, Moon confusing Frozen with The Beatles, Devon forgetting famous Mikes exist and Rizz losing to the most famous bald supervillain on Earth.
