The Duct Tape Chronicles, AC/DC Dreams & The Pedophile Island Debate
Strap in, preferably without requiring five rolls of duct tape, because Episode 101 starts with rock ’n’ roll dreams and somehow ends up debating an island nobody wants featured in the tourism brochure. Lern is heading to AC/DC with her mom, the Foo Fighters are opening, and she has one very specific prediction: Dave Grohl is going to come back out and perform with AC/DC. Why? Inside information? A secret source? Years of carefully studying concert history? Nope. She had a dream about it. Welcome to the comedy podcast where subconscious visions are apparently acceptable journalism. With St. Louis preparing for the massive show, the crew gets into ticket prices, parking chaos and just how much people will spend to see legendary artists. That leads to the absolutely bonkers money surrounding Alan Jackson’s farewell show and George Strait drawing more than 100,000 ticket-buying fans. Turns out being the King of Country is a pretty solid business model. Then we board an airplane, where everything immediately gets worse. The crew discovers the spectacular image of an unruly first-class passenger who reportedly became abusive toward people onboard and eventually got restrained by fellow passengers with zip ties and enough duct tape to make the hardware aisle nervous. The resulting photo is art. Horrible, chaotic, “how did your vacation get here?” art. Unfortunately, the airline conversation takes a much darker turn with the story surrounding longtime Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton. According to the details discussed on the show, another passenger noticed disturbing messages on his laptop during a flight, photographed the screen and alerted the crew. That kicks off a larger conversation about privacy on airplanes, whether anybody actually pays attention to what strangers are doing beside them and Rafe accidentally becoming emotionally invested in another passenger’s giant-font family text drama. Then another disturbing story hits much closer to home as the show discusses the arrest of a St. Charles-area middle school assistant principal on a child sexual abuse material charge. The allegations lead into a serious conversation about predators, how technology may make them easier to uncover, whether these cases were historically hidden or handled differently, and the terrifying responsibility of keeping kids safe around adults placed in positions of trust. Naturally, because this is The Rizzuto Show and apparently we cannot process anything normally, the conversation eventually circles back to the previously discussed concept of “Pedophile Island”: convicted predators, one island, everybody else gets to stay very far away. Is this a carefully researched criminal justice proposal? Absolutely not. Is the brainstorming department nevertheless open for business? Unfortunately, yes. Crap on Celebrity then attempts to restore some sanity and immediately fails. Beyoncé has anniversary merchandise that includes a wildly expensive wooden box. Kelly Osbourne discusses the devastating effect losing Ozzy had on her health. Alex Van Halen and Sammy Hagar are still feuding because apparently retirement-age rock stars are contractually forbidden from simply muting each other. The crew also digs into Soundgarden working with unreleased Chris Cornell vocals and the emotional challenge of creating something new while protecting a friend’s legacy. Moon remembers Every Time I Die guitarist and wrestler Andy Williams following his death, sharing personal memories of a guy he knew for years as an overwhelmingly positive force. Rafe also reflects on losing comedian Danny Maupin, turning the show briefly and genuinely reflective before everybody inevitably wanders back toward entertainment chaos. There’s also talk about the Michael Jackson biopic, Pamela Anderson, an extremely bizarre-looking Elizabeth Holmes documentary involving Nathan Fielder, Rob Lowe’s alleged Tom Cruise rivalry, the search for the next James Bond and Carrie Underwood attempting Limp Bizkit’s “Break Stuff.” AC/DC. Foo Fighters. Duct tape. Airplane snooping. Celebrity insanity. Serious conversations, terrible solutions and several moments where everyone involved probably should have reconsidered owning a microphone. Just another comedy podcast from The Rizzuto Show.
