In today’s episode Rosa Torr chats with Ayobola Kekere-Ekun who is participating in the auction with some beautiful works sent all the way from Nigeria where she lives and works. In the episode we chat about Ayobola’s practise and how she explores themes of gender, power and the human condition through distinctive aesthetics and mediums. Ayobola Kekere-Ekun (b. 1993) is a contemporary visual artist. She was born in Lagos, Nigeria. Her B.A. and M.A. in Visual arts were received from the Department of Creative Arts, University of Lagos; where she majored in Graphic Design. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Art and Design at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. Ayobola is also a Lecturer at the Department of Creative Arts, University of Lagos. Ayobola’s work often explores subjects connected to gender, mythology, power and the human condition in a multi-layered way; creating work through a labour-intensive process. Ayobola works predominantly with a technique known as quilling, in which strips of paper are individually shaped to create forms. The Art on a Postcard Auction for International Women's Day is raising money for The Women's Prison Team at The Hepatitis C Trust to support their important work. The artists who have donated their work have used 'i am' as inspiration for the artwork. Artists include such luminaries as Claudette Johnson known for her large scale paintings of black women; ‘Punjabi, Liverpudlian’ Dr. Chila Kumari Burman whose joyous work has been adorning the Tate Britain since Diwali; Japanese born, Brooklyn based artist Yui Kugimiya whose work is unique in its use of traditional painting techniques to create quirky stop-motion animations and Antonia Showering whose lockdown year included a White Cube show and representation by Timothy Taylor. Bidding starts at £50 25 Feb – 11 March 2021 View the auction - bit.ly/2XWXmiN
