Episode 28: Dune Nerds, The Theology of Dune, New Dune vs. 1984 Dune Movie Review

The Catholic Nerds do a deep dive into the Theology of Dune as they review the new Dune movie directed by Denis Villeneuve. SPOILERS AHEAD! We go through all the Christian symbolism of Dune, plus all our favorite parts from both the 2021 Dune and 1984 Dune -- all the 1980s goodness of the 80s Dune and all the good newness of the new Dune.   Scott wrote an article a while back on the Theology of Dune, all its Christian symbolism, and references to the Bible. It's now ranked #1 on Google and all the search engines on the subject, and Scott has expanded it into an entire book, The Theology of Sci-Fi: The Christian's Guide to the Galaxy, available where all good books are sold ;)    Here is a brief primer on all the references to Jesus and the Bible in Frank Herbert's Dune:  Of course, the Kwisatz Haderach, Muad'dib, Paul Atreides as Christ and Messiah;  The Fremen desert dwellers as the Jews and Israelites;  Baron Harkonnen as King Herod and Pharaoh;  Lady Jessica as the Blessed Mother, the Sayadina/Sayyida in not just Catholicism, but Islam, as well (read more on that here);  Shai Hulud and the Sandworms as Satan and the dragon/serpent of Genesis;  AND did you know the Bible is actually in the Dune universe??  ALL THAT, plus updates on our families surviving a Category-5 Hurricane and all our new babies! St. Gerard, pray for us!  Plus, here is how to further nerdify yourself with the C-Nerds: Check out our sister podcast: Catholic Nerds Gaming (Catholic DnD) and the ongoing saga of the Legend of the Radiant Lady!
