Young Talent Needs to Be in the Room
In his Wisdom From The Patio video series, Kongusto President and founder Joel Ciniero argues that all-remote work may be quietly costing companies their culture and young professionals their career growth. When every employee works from home, says Joel Ciniero, something is lost. “Whatever that corporate culture is, is dying slow.” Culture, he points out, isn’t something anyone formally teaches. “In all my years, I’ve never worked at a company where they said we’re teaching corporate culture 101,” Ciniero says. “Corporate culture is learned in the hall, in the lunch, by the coffee machine.” It also comes from watching another person speak in a room and engage the team, and from “seeing that synergy.” Being in person matters for another reason as well. It gives senior managers and mentors a chance to recognize the most talented people on the team. As leaders, Ciniero says, “we need to focus on the top talent.” In his view, remote work can get in the way. “We flatline their career trajectory by making this work from home because they become sort of incremental in what they do.” Without time together, he explains, there’s little chance to build the kind of relationship that opens a bigger path. That leads him to what he sees as a responsibility. “We owe a duty to our young executives to bring them in and to help them with their career trajectories.” The skills involved are hard to pick up from a distance. “We’ve got to train the creativity, how to run the business, how to inspire people, and you just don’t do that on a Zoom call.” His closing point is direct. “Economically and from a career perspective, we owe our young people better.” For telecom providers, managed service providers, contact centers, and outsourcing organizations weighing how and where their teams work, the question goes beyond productivity. It’s also about who is learning, who is being noticed, and who is being prepared to lead. It’s a view that fits how Kongusto operates, bringing its people into a professional workplace. The takeaway: Culture and career growth are learned by being around people, so leaders who want to develop young talent may need to bring it into the room.
