BOOSHELF - Media Tycoon Fights For Freedom - MARK-CLIFFORD-TROUBLEMAKER-
1920 HONG KONG Media Tycoon Fights For Freedom Mark Clifford, author of The Troublemaker: How Jimmy Lai Became a Billionaire, Hong Kong's Greatest Dissident, and China's Most Feared Critic: Clifford chronicles the life of Jimmy Lai, who escaped starvation during China's Great Famine as a twelve-year-old refugee to Hong Kong. Starting as a child worker in textile factories, Lai eventually built the successful retail clothing chain Giordano. The 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre deeply transformed Lai, inspiring him to launch Next Magazine and the newspaper Apple Daily to champion free speech and democracy. Following the passage of Beijing's 2020 National Security Law, Lai refused to flee Hong Kong, resulting in his arrest, the closure of his media enterprise, and ongoing solitary imprisonment. (1)
