1917 US MARINES Nick Lloyd, author of 100 Days: The Campaign That Ended World War I, Part One: In August 1918, Supreme Allied Commander Ferdinand Foch initiated the Hundred Days Offensive with the Battle of Amiens. Utilizing short surprise artillery bombardments, massed Mark V tanks, creeping barrages, and low-altitude air support, Allied forces broke through German lines. The sudden defeat shattered German morale in what Erich Ludendorff termed the "black day of the German Army." Severely weakened by the naval blockade, influenza, and shrinking reserves, the German army began a forced retreat across the Western Front as combined British, French, Dominion, and fresh American forces maintained relentless pressure.
