Black Panther Party for Self Defense – 60th Anniversary
On today’s show, -October 1966 marks the birthplace of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense in Oakland, CA. This year, the Party is commemorating 60 years since its inception. Emory Douglas is the former Minister of Culture and Revolutionary Artist for the Black Panther Party. Emory helped define the aesthetics of protest at the height of the Civil Rights era. He is one of the most influential radical political artists of the 20th century. Walter Turner is a Professor Social Sciences and Coordinator of Umoja Equity Institute at College of Marin. Walter is the host of weekly program “Africa Today” on KPFA. Dr Hodari Davisis a founding partner in Edutainment for Equity, the Artistic Director of E4E Arts and a recent PHD graduate from the University of California at Davis. He is the Artistic Director of Young Gifted and Black and a founder of the Life is Living Festival and Campaign. He has been a teacher and educator, artist and activist, community organizer and artistic director, father and coach for over 30 years.
