Alex Murdaugh and Matthew Farwell — DNA They Never Tested and Texts She Was Told to Delete
Two cases in one episode. Murdaugh's defense team put untested DNA before a judge — unknown male profiles under both of Maggie Murdaugh's fingernails and on the phone recovered from the roadside, none belonging to Alex. A federal prisoner's statement naming $15,000-a-week pill sales had been buried in state files since before the first trial. The defense attorney told the judge Murdaugh passed a polygraph; the judge corrected him — failure, on financial crimes, never the murders. In Matthew Farwell's federal trial, a prosecutor and an FBI agent alternated reading his text messages with Sandra Birchmore. He said he figured she would have said no because she was young. He pressed her to delete their exchanges. Days after her death, his work phone logged searches on consent revocation. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty.
