Kohberger Says His Lawyers Promised Him WHAT?!
Bryan Kohberger says his original defense lawyers made misleading promises and warnings before he pleaded guilty. The assertion could put his conversations with Anne Taylor’s team at the center of a post-conviction fight, even as the state asks the court to end it. The plea spared Kohberger a potential death sentence and resulted in four consecutive life sentences for the murders of Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. He answered guilty under oath. His later handwritten filing alleges he was pressured and lacked information necessary to make a free choice. Those are contested legal claims, not a reversal of his convictions. Prosecutors have their own record to point to. At the July 2025 plea hearing, Bill Thompson outlined evidence the state expected to introduce: Kohberger’s DNA linked to a knife sheath, an Amazon purchase of a Ka-Bar knife and sheath, nighttime cell-phone connections in the area and vehicle surveillance. Thompson also described efforts to clean the car. A jury never weighed this full presentation because the trial ended in a plea. Defense attorney Eric Faddis joins Tony Brueski to discuss what must happen before a former defense lawyer is asked to testify, how narrowly a waiver of legal confidentiality may operate, and why an unfavorable plea outcome is not automatically ineffective assistance. The court’s October 14 order wiped scheduled hearings from the calendar without deciding the merits. Kohberger’s request to withdraw his plea and the prosecution’s motion to dismiss remain at issue.
