Lindsay Clancy Trial: Prosecution's Own Psychiatrist Gets Picked Apart on the Stand

Dr. Avram Mack, the psychiatrist prosecutors brought in to rebut the defense's insanity claim, spent Monday getting worked over by defense attorney Kevin Reddington in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy — the Duxbury, Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children, 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan, with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. Clancy faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation, has pleaded not guilty, and is mounting an insanity defense built on claims of severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication. Reddington opened by dredging up prior cases where courts found Mack didn't have the credentials to testify — not exactly a confidence builder before he even got to the substance. Then came the number nobody likes saying out loud in a courtroom: several hundred thousand dollars a year, Mack's take from expert testimony work. Reddington had him define confirmatory bias, then asked if he had it evaluating Clancy. Mack said no. He testified he evaluated Clancy in 2026 — three years after the killings — armed beforehand with defense records, DCF files, and medical history, across two doctors and roughly eight hours of interviews plus testing. He also noted that Drs. Heilbrun, Resnick, and Zeizel landed on bipolar 2, another doctor said bipolar 1, and that postpartum psychosis isn't even in the DSM, so he wouldn't use the term as a diagnosis. Prosecutors still need Mack's testimony to hold up despite the defense's mental-health claims. After the killings, Clancy allegedly attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out running errands at the time and has since relocated to Manhattan. The trial continues in Plymouth Superior Court.
