Creating the Perfect Vibe: How DJs Match the Music to the Moment | DJNTV
Great DJs don’t just play music for the people in the room—they play music that fits the room itself. On this DJNTV Tuesday Night Music Show, Brian S. Redd, Jay Brannan, DJ Damon, and John Cawley explore how DJs can use background music to enhance a venue, setting, and atmosphere. Pasted text From outdoor weddings surrounded by trees and wildflowers to mountain venues, elegant cocktail hours, barn weddings, rooftop events, and upscale spaces, the crew discusses how the physical environment can help guide your musical choices. Sometimes that means acoustic and bluegrass-inspired music; other times it might be smooth jazz, ambient tracks, house music, or even Yacht Rock. Pasted text The conversation digs into the artistry behind moving beyond the same standard cocktail and dinner playlists. The goal is to find music that makes guests think, “This music is perfect for this place.” Brian shares an example of using whimsical instrumental music at a garden wedding because it complemented the trees, flowers, creek, and overall setting. Pasted text They also discuss changing the musical atmosphere throughout an event. Brian explains how he may use instrumental smooth jazz during dinner before transitioning into more upbeat instrumental house after speeches—subtly telling the room that the energy is about to change. Pasted text And, in classic Tuesday Night Music Show fashion, the conversation takes a few entertaining detours into songs whose lyrics don’t mean what many wedding couples think they mean! Do you change your background music based on the venue and environment, or do you have a go-to playlist you use everywhere?
