Violence Week

In East Lansing, Michigan, an outburst of violence at the local high school, and the discovery of a gun, leads to a community reckoning over school safety, racial equity, and the role of police in schools. This four-part documentary series asks big questions about school safety, policing, racial equity, and what it’s like to be a teenager in an era of school shootings.
Important Story Well Told

I really enjoyed this four-part series. Of course some moments are tough and sad, but Emily relates these real events with a light touch, while also keeping you grounded, and thinking (and re-thinking). There were several twists and turns I did not see coming, and most importantly, the series stays firmly tethered to an important central question: how can we balance the needs for fairness, equity, and justice, against the need for safety? This is well, well worth your time.

I’ve have forgotten their names. I’m sorry. I would like to put the editor of the school newspaper and the young man from the track team, in the White House. Smart, intelligent with common sense approach to what their schools need to survive these days. I am for resource officers so they can send for help immediately. I am for students to keep cell phones if they can remain for emergency purposes only. I do understand they can distract the teachers. I would like to discipline on a case by case basis. I hear your stress and your tears. My heart breaks for all of the students and their fears.
