What's behind the UK riots?
Violent anti-immigration protests have been taking place in cities across the UK for more than a week, leading to hundreds of arrests. The unrest has been linked to the online spread of misinformation about the fatal stabbing of three young girls in the seaside town of Southport in late July. With more protests expected, police have insisted the situation is “manageable” and praised the thousands who have turned out in counter-demonstrations. But how did an isolated attack lead to riots throughout the country? On this episode Caitríona Perry is joined by the BBC’s investigations correspondent, Daniel De Simone, to explain what’s been happening both on the ground and online, and examine how far-right groups looked to capitalise on uncertainty following the tragic events in Southport.
