There has been an ongoing debate over whether American identity is entirely based on agreeing to a particular proposition or whether there is also an element of shared heritage, traditions, and shared history that is critical to the concept. At his swearing-in ceremony as New York mayor, Zohran Mamdani explicitly rejected the American proposition, but he will pay no price and continue to run America's most important city. With this one declaration, Mamdani put the propositional nation to the test, and it failed.
