The 60th Anniversary of the Black Arts Movement
On today show, we talk about the history and 60th anniversary of the Black Arts Movement -the cultural arm to the Black Power Movement with Ayodele Nzinga and Marvin X. Guests Dr. Ayodele Nzinga is an actress, producer/ director, playwright, poet, dramaturg, educator, and community advocate. She is the director of the Lower Bottom Playaz, Inc., Executive Director of the Black Arts Movement Business District Community Development Corporation, of Oakland, (BAMBD CDC); and founder and producer of BAMBDFEST International Biennial. Marvin X is a poet, essayist, director, and lecturer and is known as a key writer and playwright of the Black Arts Movement. This movement was an important part of the larger Black Power Movement of the 1960s. Marvin X has published 30 books, essays, poems, plays, including In the Crazy House Called America, Beyond Religion Toward Spirituality, Wisdom of Plato Negro Parables/Fables, and Somethin’ Proper, among others. Events: Celebrating the Black Arts Movement 60th Anniversary BAMANNIVERSARY 7/31-8/3 is a four-day activation celebrating the Black Arts Movement District in Oakland and BAMBD CDC’s 10 years of service to arts and the culture of Oakland. Events take place at BAM House and Latham Square in Oakland. Thursday, July 31: Winter in America at BAM House (1540 Broadway, Oakland), featuring Oakland Poet Laureate WordSlanger, Tongo Eisen-Martin, and an open mic. Friday, August 1: A full day including Congo Square market, an art talk with Jahlil Nzinga, a free outdoor concert at Latham Square (4:00 PM – 7:00 PM) with Red Lotus, Modupe, and Honey Gold Jasmin, followed by a meet-and-greet and evening after-party.
