Charles Spencer Takes Aim at Royal Life and King Charles as Diana Feud Escalates
Charles Spencer is continuing to speak out following publication of his Princess Diana memoir, arguing that marrying into the Royal Family can be harder than growing up inside it. Speaking with Tina Brown, Spencer pointed to the experiences of Diana and Harry and Meghan and said the institution has “a way of thinking that is very specific.” He also described the Palace response to his book as “very aggressive” and questioned why King Charles did not directly deny the claims attributed to him. Spencer also discussed his relationships with Prince William and Prince Harry, describing himself simply as an uncle who is available when needed. He confirmed that Harry and his family stayed with him during the summer and said he told William and Harry about his completed memoir at the same time. The Earl revisited one of the most painful moments following Diana’s death: William and Harry walking behind their mother’s coffin. Spencer says he still believes the boys should never have been asked to make that procession and acknowledged feeling guilty that he did not do more to prevent it. He also took a swipe at Charles’s temper, joking about the King’s infamous encounter with a leaking pen.
