BONUS EPISODE: Marking 25 Years Since 9/11 with Vintage Seattle Radio Recordings
On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel marks the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States by sharing vintage audio from KIRO Radio from the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001. In this 45-minute recording (one side of an analog tape, made by Feliks at home that morning 25 years ago), we hear Newsradio 710 KIRO deep in its "peak news & talk" years - when a big newsroom was in operation around the clock to gather and report the facts, and wise and eloquent talk show hosts (including Dave Ross) calmly analyzed and interpreted what was going on . . . in real-time. Some of the beloved local voices heard on this tape include Dave Ross, Gregg Hersholt, Kirsten Kendrick, Heather Bosch, Tim Haeck, Tony Minor, Jon Repp, Brian Calvert, Ursula Reutin and the late Jane Shannon. We also hear national updates from the radio division of CBS News - which, as of earlier this year, is long-gone. This recording was made beginning around 10:45am Pacific Time, or about five hours after the attacks; it's not breaking news, but it's still a chilling audio time capsule from one of the darkest days in American history. Through it all, the local voices we hear are steady, and these radio professionals did their part to help the community process the shock and disbelief.
