The New Deal & 1,100 Backpacks, with Special Guest: Herpes

The Non Moms were in rare form this week, Y'All! Skippers, if you've made it this far, you can get your skip-button fingers ready, and tune in at around the 20-minute mark.  Kelly kicks things off by telling Debbie Jo about Frances Perkins who we will heretofore consider the Godmother of the Labor Movement. Without Frances, the New Deal might not ever have happened, or at least not as we know it. You can thank her for 40-hour work-weeks and the abolition of child labor. You can thank yourselves for the destruction of many of the benefits once afforded by the labor unions, like 40-hour work-weeks and overtime pay. Well done, America! Continuing the coverage of Mental Health Awareness Month, Debbie Jo follows up Frances with the story of Alison Malmon, Founder and Executive Director of the nonprofit organization Active Minds. Alison was inspired by the death of her brother, who committed suicide, to change the mental health narrative on college campuses across the United States. Suicide is the leading cause of death for college students and 1,100 college students each year commit suicide. Active Minds helps empower students to help one another and prevent such deaths. Finally, this all leads to a conversation about herpes and the stigma attached to the herpes virus. Debbie Jo shares her personal life experience, surprising even herself. Please, if you are considering suicide, reach out for help, you can call the Suicide Prevent Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 or visit https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/.  Sources: https://www.facebook.com/Peopleyoumaynotknowaboutbutprobablyshould/posts/1995352387422570http://francesperkinscenter.org/herlife/http://www.butlerdearden.com/about/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Settlement_movementhttps://www.activeminds.org/about-us/our-story/https://oc87recoverydiaries.org/alison-malmon-active-minds/
