Thrive Deeper: Acts 5-8
Acts 5–8 traces a decisive movement in the life of the early church: from a Spirit-filled Jerusalem community marked by holiness and bold witness, through internal pressure and external persecution, toward the gospel’s expansion beyond Jerusalem. And this section begins with a story that feels almost too severe for the New Testament. We expect judgment like this in the wilderness, at Sinai, or in the prophetic warnings of Israel’s history — but here it is, right in the middle of the Spirit-filled church. Ananias and Sapphira do not persecute the apostles, deny the resurrection, or lead a public rebellion. They lie. And they die. The shock of the story forces us to ask whether we have made the early church safer, softer, and less holy than Luke presents it. This is not a passage about a harsh God interrupting a gracious age; it is a passage about the dangerous nearness of God among a people who bear his name. The fear of the Lord.
