FR Ep #321 How to Deal With Emotional Contagion with Dr Bruce Hutchison
Today on Feminine Roadmap an insightful conversation about emotional contagion with retired clinical psychologist Dr. Bruce Hutchison. The world events of the past 3 years has left a massive emotional aftermath in its wake on our society. Dr. Bruce reminds us that emotions don’t think and that has contributed to the current state of emotional turmoil we are experiencing. He talks about how to handle emotions personally, in society, and politics. When we carry on conversations, he shares how to become more emotionally aware of yourself and the person or people we are talking with. Since we all feel emotion, it is important to first become aware of our own emotional state while becoming present to the states of others. Emotions flow through society, passed on by mirror neurons. It’s natural to begin to merge with others emotions especially when the situation is more charged. Our emotions naturally intensify during times of turmoil and can easily begin to run rampant causing arguments, division and the cancel culture as we have been experiencing. Without becoming present to our selves and others there is a danger of the emotional contagion continuing unchecked. Once we begin to change our thoughts and behavior, we can begin to change our emotional state. As we practice slowing ourselves down, paying attention to our body position, tone of voice, and breathing, we can change our behavior. Stepping back for a moment can often help give us a little perspective and bring our emotions in check. Dr. Bruce encourages listeners to be aware that emotions drive behavior and practice helpful, correct thoughts to manage your own emotions. He stresses how important it is to regulate our emotions in order to turn the tide of emotional turmoil in ourselves and our sphere of influence.
