Is Your Pastor Preaching God's Message or His Own?
Have you ever heard a pastor get on stage and say, "I had an entirely different sermon prepared, but God told me to preach something else today"? Andrew and Dusty have heard it plenty of times. But that raises an interesting question... If God just told you to change your sermon, who told you to prepare the first one? This week on the Bible Belt Bros Podcast, the guys dive into a conversation about following the Holy Spirit, planning church services, and how easily Christians can throw around the phrase "God told me." Dusty looks back at his years in youth ministry, when he would plan sermon series and teaching schedules months in advance. Churches often have entire calendars of messages, themes, and events planned out long before Sunday morning arrives. But if we're supposed to be following the Holy Spirit, how much of what happens at church is spiritual direction, and how much is just good programming? And what happens when a pastor suddenly announces that God wants him to throw out the sermon he spent all week preparing? The conversation eventually turns to something a little more personal: people who claim God told them to tell YOU something. "God told me you need to take this job." "God told me you should start preaching." "God told me we're supposed to be together." But what if God hasn't told you any of those things? Andrew and Dusty talk about the difference between genuinely hearing from God and using God's name to give your own opinions, desires, or decisions more authority. They also explore whether using God's name to manipulate someone could be a form of taking the Lord's name in vain. Neither guy is denying that God can speak through other people. In fact, they both share how God has used relationships and conversations to shape their faith. But they also believe Christians should be extremely careful about claiming to speak on God's behalf. Along the way, the guys question why so many denominations claim to follow the same Holy Spirit while arriving at completely different conclusions, joke about pastors using ChatGPT to write their sermons, and accidentally come up with another future episode idea: If every Christian has direct access to God through the Holy Spirit, why do we need pastors? Of course, it wouldn't be the Bible Belt Bros without a few completely unrelated conversations. Dusty shares his latest role-playing adventure involving a fake mustache and a questionable private detective. He also celebrates receiving permission from his wife to tell her she's crazy when he doesn't fold the laundry correctly. And Andrew gets increasingly concerned about where the conversation is going. By the end, the guys manage to turn their entire discussion into a joke about God telling everyone to subscribe to the podcast. So how do we know when God is actually speaking? And when someone says, "God told me to tell you something," should we automatically believe them? Join Andrew and Dusty for another episode of faith, questionable theology, ridiculous rabbit trails, and the conversations Christians sometimes think about but don't always say out loud.
